Just in time for carnival season, this July will see the release of Shake A Leg - the waist-winding, bassbin-bothering debut album from Bristol-based DJ / producer Mr Benn. A true labour of love, the project took close to four years to complete (the title is a nod to this particular case of West Country tardiness) and is the first album release from Nice Up! Records.
Taking in dub, roots, dancehall, bashment, hip hop, house, soca and dubstep, and featuring a legion of old-school heavyweights including Top Cat, Tenor Fly and The Ragga Twins alongside up-and-coming talent such as Serocee, Eva Lazarus, Nãnci Correia and Peppery, Shake A Leg perfectly epitomises the UK’s ongoing love affair with Jamaica’s soundsystem culture and is a vibrant dedication to its music - past, present and future.
Reared on a tasty diet of Aswad, The Specials and King Tubby, 90s hip hop, plenty of jungle and hi-life rhythms, the musical influences behind Mr Benn’s sound are vast and wide but always rooted in a passion for the heavy, heavy bass that his home town of Bristol is so renowned for.
His genre-hopping DJ sets and previous single releases have earned him a loyal following, global gigs, collaborations with the likes of Massive Attack’s Daddy G (whom he plays alongside as part of DJ collective, Bristol Hi-Fi) and legendary UK rapper Blak Twang, and a whole host of remix honours including Aswad, Horace Andy, Cutty Ranks, Monkey Mafia and Joe Driscoll.
"Mr Benn is one of, if not THE finest of the new breed of reggae producers from the UK"
Daddy G (Massive Attack)
"One of the best reggae records to come out of England for years. 9/10"
"From party reggae to driving roots tunes, this album is a superbly well rounded collection of music that always keeps the dancefloor in mind. Well worth the wait!"
“5/5 - doesn't get much better!"
Barry Ashworth (Dub Pistols)
